Ireland’s Shane Sweetnam and Daniel Coyle cruise through to Olympic Show Jumping individual final
Ireland’s Shane Sweetnam and Daniel Coyle have both booked their place in tomorrow’s (Tuesday) Olympic Show Jumping final in Paris, after commanding performances in today’s individual qualifier.
Cork-born Sweetnam was the 13th rider into the arena in the individual qualifier with James Kann Cruz (ISH) – an 11-year-old gelding bred in Co Galway by Patrick Connolly. A hugely impressive clear round in a very fast time of 73.35 seconds saw Sweetnam shoot to the top of the leaderboard and they would finish the day in second place overall.
Derry’s Daniel Coyle and his brilliant mare Legacy came into the individual qualifier on the back of two clear rounds in the team competition, and they remained fault free after another brilliant performance today, crossing the line in 73.64 to finish in third place.
Meath’s Cian O’Connor and Maurice were the last of the three Irish riders to jump. They picked up four faults in 75.17 seconds and would finish in 33rd place – just outside the to 30 who qualify for the final.
The Olympic individual Show Jumping final gets underway at 9am Irish time tomorrow (Tuesday), with all combinations starting on a zero score. The competition will be one round against the clock with a jump-off against the clock in case of a tie on penalties for first place.
