Over three hundred horses competed at the last qualifier for Dublin Horse Show at the Meadows Equestrian Centre.
First up was the 7/8-year-old class, 65 combinations came forward with twenty-five making it into the jump off. The torrential downpour of rain along with the technical course made for an exciting jump off. Having the advantage of going late in the draw, young rider Niamh McEvoy and BP Limitless (ISH) were able to use the advantage and take the lead in a time of 43.81. No stranger to the big occasion BP Limitless (ISH) who won the Irish Breeders classic as a five-year-old and also jumped in the Six Year Old ‘Cruising’ final at the RDS in 2021 will certainly be one watch at this year’s show. Derek McConnell and Inlaws Manolo (ISH) gave it a good shot crossing the line in 45.17. One of the most consistent horses coming through the aged classes, Inlaws Manolo (ISH) has qualified for and competed at the RDS as a 4, 6 and 7 year old. Rounding out the top three was no stranger to the RDS Ger O’Neill and the eight-year-old Tullogher Lady Liberty (ISH) finishing in a time of 46.09.
The five-year-olds saw the largest number of entries with one hundred and one competing, thirty-eight made it into the second round, of which sixteen came forward for round three. Seven combinations were clear and the last five places taken by the fastest four faults. First to go in the jump off was Nicola FitzGibbon & One Day Maybe (ISH) a mare, by Bentley Van De Heffinck (BWP), the pair set a blistering time and held the lead to the end. Nicholas Connors claimed second place aboard Jump the Gun (ISH) a gelding by I’m Special De Muze (BWP), and third placing going to local young rider Lucy Morton riding her mother’s Fintra Elsa (ISH), a mare by OBOS Quality (OLD).
The sun came out just in time for the four-year-old division to start. Eighty-eight combinations competed with forty-three advancing to round two and the judged section. Tom Hearne with the mare Killelton Ford (ISH), by OBOS Quality (OLD) were the judges pick of the day scoring 87. Coen Williams filled second spot with score of 84. Coen was riding Cutting Edge Too a mare by URANO DU CARTIGNY (SF). Close behind on a score of 83.5 was Kilkenny Order Vincent Byrne riding the Rachel Moxham owned and bred mare, Belle Mai by Luidam (KWPN). Vincent will be competing at the RDS for the twenty third year in a row and we wish him all the best.
The last competition of the day was the six-year-olds and like the previous qualifier at Mullingar it took only two rounds of jumping to determine the top twelve placings. Coming out on top was Ballypatrick rider Kevin Gallagher riding BP Casablanca (ISH) a gelding by Casall LA Silla (HOLST). Kilkenny rider Jack Ryan who is currently based in Belgium made sure his trip home for the qualifier paid off when securing second spot riding his mother Marguerite’s mare Mondavi (ISH) by Tyson (KWPN). The 2022 Five Year Old ‘Flexible’ National Champion Laurina (ISH), bred by Dr Noel Cawley took the third spot and are surely ones to watch in this year’s 6year old division at the RDS.
